SISTER MARJORIE FITZPATRICK

Sister Marjorie was born on Allumette Island, Quebec and on October 11, 1963, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Pembroke and, upon final profession, adopted the religious name of Sister Amadeus (Beloved of God).

Sister Marjorie became a teacher right after finishing high school and one summer she obtained a part-time position at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited in Chalk River in the finance department. She enjoyed that work so much that she stayed on for the next twelve years.  It was at this time that she answered God’s call and entered the Congregation.  She would go on to obtain her B.A. as well as her M.A. in Religious Education. She then did pastoral work in the parishes until the Bishop asked her to take on the role of Religious Education Director for the Diocese.

Marjorie was very active and was instrumental in setting up numerous community programs such as sponsorship of refugees, Families For Prayer, The R.C.I.A. Program, The Ecumenical Way of the Cross which still takes place today in Pembroke, as well as renewing the Associate Movement in her Congregation.  She was always interested in getting the laity involved more in the Church. Bishop Windle presented her with the ‘Papal Medal of Bene Merenti’ for service in the Church. One of Sister Marjorie’s favorite and extraordinary accomplishments was inspiring, encouraging and supporting a local couple’s dream to establish a mission in Guatemala. She prayed and worked tirelessly with others to ensure that the mission had every chance of success and the fruits of her labour are evident in the numerous top-rated "Planting Seeds" preschools in Guatemala.

Someone recently said that “Sister Marjorie imagined large and took initiative.”  She lived a life of service as she was committed to many religious and charitable organizations, sharing her gifts. She was full of gratitude for the Lord calling her to be a Sister of St. Joseph. She was also grateful to the Peterborough Convent for their loving care in her latter years. In October 2023 she celebrated her 60th year of Religious Life.

She is lovingly remembered by the members of her religious community as well as her nieces and nephews.
