King’s University College Student Awards Ceremony

The cost of university education is out of reach for many students. Academic or sports scholarships are available for those fortunate students who have achieved success in these fields. However, many students may have been prevented from belonging to either group because of their background or lack of opportunity. Yet students who demonstrate great promise for future contributions to the welfare of our society may need financial assistance to enable them to continue their education.  I was heartened and amazed at the number and variety of donors, awards, and recipients at the King’s University College Awards Ceremony on January 24.    

Sixty-seven donors presented a total of 102 awards. Some awards were established to honour alumni or former professors. Others represented interests of donors in socialjustice, education, social work, economics, law, science, or community development. But what was most striking was the variety and quality of the students. I was in awe of the ability of recipients whose volunteer work in the community, part-time employment or involvement in student leadership and organizations was matched by their ability to maintain high academic standards. It was a joy to listen to the hopes of these students and the efforts they were making to prepare themselves to make our world a better place. A senior member of the faculty commented to me: “The generous students who work hard and donate their time are also the students who make good progress in their studies.”  May their example inspire people and organizations to assist our young adults to pursue university studies.

King’s University College - Set to Imagine the Future

With King’s banners flying on breezy October 29, 2018, an official announcement was made of the transfer of 18 acres of pristine land from the Diocese of London to the steadily growing King’s University College.  The news was delivered to the eager audience crammed into a large white tent on the north-east corner of the newly acquired land at the intersection of Waterloo and Huron Streets.  The land’s immediate proximity to the present King’s makes it an excellent location for ongoing growth and expansion.

The celebration opened with members of King’s choir singing joyous selections under the direction of Janet Loo, followed by Dr. Sauro Camiletti, Interim Principal at King’s, making the special announcement.  He pointed out that in acquiring the property, the college will be doubling its footprint and preserving significant greenspace while being committed to stewarding the lands for future education.

Bishop Ronald Fabbro, Bishop of the Diocese of London, in his remarks, congratulated King’s for this huge milestone which will double the campus size and meet the changing needs of King’s.  He also stressed that King’s offers education of the whole person which is unique and critically needed in our time.

In addition, Dr. Kelly Regan, Chair of the Board of Directors, spoke of King’s and called the acquisition, “hallowed ground for the search and purpose of truth”.

The final exciting announcement was delivered by Hadia Faiz, Student Council President. She revealed that their group will donate 5 million dollars towards the 15-million-dollar campaign. King’s University College is well on its way to shaping a bright new future.          - Sr. Jean Moylan, csj

What inspires people to join in the common cause for a life-giving future?

What can inspire billions of people with very different worldviews to join in the common cause of a just and healthy, beautiful, and life-giving future?

Happening, right now, there is a fresh way of identifying who and what we are and why we are here in this universe as humans. This is a way that makes sense both scientifically and spiritually.

What is this new way or perspective? It is an evolutionary awareness that affects everything that exists within and around us from the personal to the cosmic.

David Sloan Wilson, evolutionary biologist and a pioneer in the evolution of religion, writes, “I look forward to the day when evolutionary theory becomes part of the basic training for all people who study and run our governments and economics”.

It is not only government and economic leaders but also all those who influence others in any capacity who are now becoming involved in this evolutionary (or integral) approach. Would you like to:

‘Becoming Agents of Evolutionary Change’

The Symposium, sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada, in partnership with King’s University College will be held July 4-6, 2014 at King’s, UWO, 266 Epworth Avenue, London ON. This event is planned to include a wide variety of participants such as teachers, school principals, chaplains, social workers, spiritual directors, Associates/Companions, community leaders etc.

The Keynote speaker, Carter Phipps, is author of the book Evolutionaries: Unlocking the Spiritual and Cultural Potential of Science’s Greatest Idea. He is also a journalist and leading voice in the emerging “evolutionary worldview” which combines the insights of Integral Philosophy, evolutionary science, developmental psychology, the social sciences, and evolutionary spirituality.

Our other presenter is Sue Wilson, csj. Sue is the Director of the Office for Systemic Justice for the Canadian Federation of the Sisters of St. Joseph where she is involved in research, advocacy, education and activism on a variety of justice issues. She has a Ph.D. in moral theology with a focus on social ethics.
